Getting started

Is prior musical experience necessary to join your classes?

Not at all! NYC Bouzouki School welcomes students of all musical backgrounds — including complete beginners. Whether you’ve never picked up an instrument or you’re already musically inclined, our classes are designed to meet you where you are. Our instructors guide you step by step through the fundamentals of bouzouki playing, ensuring you build a strong foundation in rhythm, technique, and Greek musical traditions at your own pace.

What age groups do you cater to in your classes?

Our bouzouki lessons are open to all age groups. We offer instruction for kids, teens, adults, and seniors, tailoring each lesson to the student’s age, ability, and goals. Whether you’re a young learner or rediscovering your musical passion later in life, NYC Bouzouki School is here to support you.

I don’t have a Bouzouki, how can I get one and will I need one before joining your school?

You don’t need a bouzouki before signing up—we can guide you through the process of choosing the right instrument. We provide resources and trusted recommendations for purchasing or renting your first bouzouki. If you’d like, we can also help you test instruments before committing.

What should I bring to my bouzouki classes?

For each class, students should bring their bouzouki, a tuner, a notebook, and a pencil. If you're attending your first class and don't yet own a bouzouki, we can help guide you through what to get and how to get started. A music stand and a recording device (such as your phone) can also be helpful for practicing at home.

What kind of bouzouki should I buy for a beginner?

Beginners can start with a well-made trichordo (3-course) or tetrachordo (4-course) bouzouki. Look for stable tuning, comfortable action and a setup that suits you. We can offer recommendations based on your budget and musical interests.

How often should I practice to make progress?

Consistency is key. We recommend students practice at least 20–30 minutes per day, five days a week. More important than duration is the quality of your practice. Repetition of scales, rhythm drills, and careful listening will go a long way. We'll guide you with structured exercises in each lesson.

Are there any online resources you recommend for practicing bouzouki?

Videos, backing tracks, progress tracking and email support are included with lessons. Our Learning Library offers Greek scales, rhythm, theory and practice resources to use alongside your lessons. Listening to recordings, including early Rebetiko players such as Markos Vamvakaris, also supports your practice.

What is your cancellation policy?

We ask that students cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours in advance to avoid being charged for the class. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice may result in forfeited credit. Group classes follow a fixed schedule, and missed sessions are not eligible for makeups unless otherwise announced.

Is there a refund policy if I need to withdraw from the classes?

For group packages, we do not offer partial refunds after the first class has occurred. If you withdraw before the first class of the package, a full refund may be issued upon request. Please contact us as early as possible so we can help make arrangements.

School community

Do students have opportunities to perform publicly?

Check the Events page for announced school events and participation details. You can also ask the school about opportunities to play with other students. Performance participation is optional.

Are there regular recitals or concerts organized by the school?

Check the Events page for announced performances or recitals. Review each listing for dates, venue and participation details, or contact the school about current plans.

Is participation in performances mandatory for students?

No, performance opportunities are entirely optional. While we believe performing can help build confidence and deepen your musical connection, we understand that it’s not for everyone. Students are welcome to enjoy bouzouki lessons purely for their own enrichment without any pressure to perform.
