Frequently Asked Questions about NYC Bouzouki Lessons
Not at all! NYC Bouzouki School welcomes students of all musical backgrounds — including complete beginners. Whether you’ve never picked up an instrument or you’re already musically inclined, our classes are designed to meet you where you are. Our instructors guide you step by step through the fundamentals of bouzouki playing, ensuring you build a strong foundation in rhythm, technique, and Greek musical traditions at your own pace.
Our bouzouki lessons are open to all age groups. We offer instruction for kids, teens, adults, and seniors, tailoring each lesson to the student’s age, ability, and goals. Whether you’re a young learner or rediscovering your musical passion later in life, NYC Bouzouki School is here to support you.
You don’t need a bouzouki before signing up—we can guide you through the process of choosing the right instrument. We provide resources and trusted recommendations for purchasing or renting your first bouzouki. If you’d like, we can also help you test instruments before committing.
There are no hidden fees. Tuition covers instruction and standard class materials. Any optional extras—such as sheet music books, performance attire, or accessories—will be communicated clearly. Performances are free to attend and participate in unless stated otherwise.
Yes, NYC Bouzouki School offers discounted lesson packages for students who enroll monthly or for a full semester. Our monthly group bouzouki package is $160, and the semester package is $576—offering a 10% savings compared to individual bookings. At this time, we do not offer formal scholarships, but we are committed to making Greek music accessible and may offer sliding scale options in certain cases.
For each class, students should bring their bouzouki, a tuner, a notebook, and a pencil. If you're attending your first class and don't yet own a bouzouki, we can help guide you through what to get and how to get started. A music stand and a recording device (such as your phone) can also be helpful for practicing at home.
Yes! Students of NYC Bouzouki School have opportunities to perform in public at community events, cultural festivals, and student showcases. These performances allow students to apply what they’ve learned in a real-world setting and experience the communal joy of Greek music. Participation is always encouraged but never required.
Yes, NYC Bouzouki School organizes seasonal performances and recitals for enrolled students. These events offer a chance to play with fellow musicians, share your progress, and become part of the broader Greek music community in NYC.
No, performance opportunities are entirely optional. While we believe performing can help build confidence and deepen your musical connection, we understand that it’s not for everyone. Students are welcome to enjoy bouzouki lessons purely for their own enrichment without any pressure to perform.
We recommend beginners start with a quality trichordo (3-string) or tetrachordo (4-string) bouzouki from a trusted luthier. Avoid low-quality imports from non-Greek sellers, as tuning and action issues can hinder learning. We’re happy to offer personal recommendations based on your budget and style preferences—just ask!
Consistency is key. We recommend students practice at least 20–30 minutes per day, five days a week. More important than duration is the quality of your practice. Repetition of scales, rhythm drills, and careful listening will go a long way. We'll guide you with structured exercises in each lesson.
Yes! We encourage students to supplement their learning with online recordings, especially early Rebetiko masters like Markos Vamvakaris. YouTube also offers helpful tutorials, but it’s important to balance that with structured lessons. We are working on building our own resource library specifically for NYC Bouzouki School students.
We ask that students cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours in advance to avoid being charged for the class. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice may result in forfeited credit. Group classes follow a fixed schedule, and missed sessions are not eligible for makeups unless otherwise announced.
For group packages, we do not offer partial refunds after the first class has occurred. If you withdraw before the first class of the package, a full refund may be issued upon request. Please contact us as early as possible so we can help make arrangements.
